Since 1998, we have petitioned against this trade in dog meat, and have sucessfully brought about changes in Filippino law, which came into effect in 2007, to make this trade illegal. This has resulted in drastic improvements, as prior to 2007, approximately 1.5 million dogs were being slaughtered every year, and that figure has been reduced to around 100 thousand. Sadly, this still equates to around 2000 dogs being brutally killed every week...
The cultural aspect of eating dog meat is based on a 7000 year old spiritual ritual, and not the reasons that this trade exists today. In today's society, the motivation behind this cruel trade is financial greed & profits for the traders. The dogs are often stolen pets, and when we perform raids on the dog traders, with help from the local police, on many occasions, we have encountered slaughtered dogs with their collars still attached. There are no humane slaughter methods. The dogs are bashed over the heads with sticks, having their throats cut, or stabbed in the groin area, and the other dogs are stacked in cages, and are made to watch the slaughter, to terrify them further, as the traders believe that the meat tastes better, if the dogs are terrified.
Seeing 100's of dogs crammed tightly in tiny cages, unable to move and breath is a terrible sight to behold. Many die from suffocation and heat exhaustion before they are slaughtered. The ones who survive are brutally beaten and killed.
The Animal Kingdom Foundation have a 2 Hectare facility 90km North of the capital, Manila. Here, the many dogs that we rescue, are free to live happy, contented lives, cared for by our kennel staff and veterinarians. We hold adoption days to rehome as many dogs as we can. We also visit various locations throughout the Country, visiting schools to educate children on animal welfare. We also provide free vaccination days and perform free spay operations for those who cannot afford to have their pets neutered.
Since I first began working for the charity, I now promote their work in the UK, taking part in TV appearances, writing books, and generally promoting the charity, in order to raise much needed donations to continue the work..
However, we have a new crisis emerging...
The Animal Kingdom Foundation has always leased the shelter land, since becoming operational in 1998. That lease is due to expire. We need to actually purchase this land, in order to secure the future for the many dogs we currently have, and for those that we rescue in the future. Without our kennels, the dogs will have nowhere to go, and will most likely be put to sleep.
I ask humbly for all donations..however small, as every penny counts, to make the future of the shelter a certainty...
Many thanks, Sincerely, Gary Edwards
